What is the difference between Yellow Dog Linux 6 Mirror and just Yellow Dog Linux 6?

What is the difference between Yellow Dog Linux 6 Mirror and just Yellow Dog Linux 6? Is it ok if i put the mirror into my PS3? Will it work like the regular one?

If you are talking about a download link, . . .

I suspect you are, then a Mirror site is simply an alternative site that you can download the same program from.

The program is the same, but the site is usually in another country. Mirrors sites are there to ensure availability, if one is down, (not working), then you can get the same product from the mirror site.

Now with Linux, if it is part of the name, this Open Source program is developed everywhere, and there could be versions called "Yellow Dog Linux 6 Mirror". If that's the case, I'd guess it's the newer one, but I really don't know.

Good luck with that.
Reply:1st answerer is right, the download from the mirror link would work the same as the first one. So it's ok to put in your ps3 and would work. But I strongly suggest you consider another distribution. Yellow Dog is a commercial venture, their focus is selling clustered ps3's to businesses to use for high-speed applications. They aren't much concerned with individual user support, and for linux, you will need support, believe me.

Linux was started by the users, is developed by the users, and is maintained and supported by the users. User-to-user support is what makes it work. If you install YDL, you will likely want to switch later on, and if you don't have an external hard drive, the OS will take up half of your drive space. It's huge.

Because of the huge community supporting it I would recommend Ubuntu, which can be found at

also Fedora has an excellent reputation. For more advanced users Gentoo is a good distro.
Reply:ydl mirror is simply a download link such as this one:

a mirror allows you to download ydl.
