What would be the best Linux distribution to try for a complete newcomer?

Have decided to try out Linux as most of the applications I currently use are open source anyway. However, there are a myriad of different distributions to choose from. Which would give the best general overview of the Linux experience

What would be the best Linux distribution to try for a complete newcomer?
Ubuntu is easy to set up and is a nice one to try especially as you obviously like open source! Check out their web site and their philosophy:

Also have a look at Damn Small Linux! http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/

Have fun!!!
Reply:Ubantu linux is free and very user friendly. I have used many other linux oses and this seems to be the best. It looks and feels alot like Mac OSx
Reply:I would recommend Ubuntu Linux. That was the first Linux distribution I installed and tried, and it's the one I go to when I need a Linux box. With its rapid update and release cycles, I believe it would work the best for you.
Reply:Ubuntu is supposed to be very good but for a complete novice I would suggest Suse:

it probably has better hardware support than any other distro and it's config tool Yast2 is very user friendly.

whichever distro you choose a good idea is to sign up to the following forums:

and for suse: http://www.suseforums.net/index.php?

if you go for suse %26amp; need any help, mail me I may be able to help or point you in the right direction.
Reply:Puppy Linux
Reply:I have tried various and find them fairly similar. Pick one.
