How well does linux actually run on ipods?

I've done reasearch on linux and found out that linux is very cool and interesting. But, it is taking to long to figure out a hoax from the actual truth. How well does linux work on which ipods is what I am mainly wondering and still trying to find out because as soon as I get money for an ipod, pda, psp, ect., I will need to know what I need and want to buy. What I want is a device that is under 300$ and has linux on it and is the best that it can be.

(videos, emulators, and opera browsing would be very good)

You will not see me give this type of answer very often so cherish it. PSP although this thing was utter crap the day it hit the market, it has hands down the best portable emulation on the market. Linux AKA rockbox for the Ipod is a great way to make a $hitty Mp3 player a lot better but you are only offered a few games. The PSP although bulky has a new firmware hack on its way that even allows new firmware versions (including the new slim PSP) to downgrade, allowing for a virtual myriad of emulator options including a fully functional PSX emulator. Some Windows based PDA's handle emulation very well but they all have terrible controls when it comes to gaming and ony the really good ones can actually pull off any good games.
